There are three (3) ASHI Membership designations:

CI = Certified Inspector
These individuals are full members of ASHI and have met the following rigid requirements:

  1. Passed the National Home Inspector Examination or State of Illinois Licensing Examination, and, ASHI's Standards and Ethics Examination. These exams test the inspectors knowledge of residential construction, major mechanical systems, defect recognition, inspection techniques, report writing, and ASHI's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
  2. Had inspection reports successfully verified for compliance with ASHI's Standards of Practice.
  3. Submitted valid proof of performance of a least 250 fee-paid home inspections that meet or exceed the ASHI Standards of Practice.
  4. Acquired 20 hours of continued education per year (Illinois Licensing only requires 3 hours per year).

AL = Associate with Logo Use Privilege
These individuals have met most of the requirements for Certified Inspector status:

  1. Passed the National Home Inspector Examination or State of Illinois Licensing Examination, and, ASHI's Standards and Ethics Examination.
  2. ASHI has verified performance of 50 fee-paid inspections in substantial compliance with the Standards of Practice.
  3. Acquired 20 hours of continued education per year (Illinois Licensing only requires 3 hours per year).

A = Associate without Logo Use Privilege
Associates have not yet met the ASHI Certified Inspector or Logo Use Privilege requirements, however:

  1. In order to perform Home Inspections in the State of Illinois, an individual must be licensed. This includes passing the Illinois Licensing Examination which is the equivalent to the ASHI's National Home Inspector Examination.
  2. Acquired 20 hours of continued education per year (Illinois Licensing only requires 3 hours per year). Associates may be highly experienced inspectors who have just joined ASHI, or they may be entry level inspectors who have completed training or otherwise entered the profession.
